A hotel in southern Labrador is up for sale by tender in order to satisfy an outstanding mortgage on the property.
According to a notice of sale by tender published over the weekend in The Telegram, The Florian Hotel, located at 4 Buckle’s Point Rd. in Forteau, will be sold to satisfy amounts due on a mortgage dated Feb. 7, 2019.
Atlantic Canadian law firm Stewart McKelvey is handling the sales process on behalf of the mortgagee and will accept sealed tenders for the land and premises until 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21.
A certified cheque, covering 10 per cent of the tender amount, must be included with the sealed tender.
Current owners
Shane and Karen Dumaresque are the owners of The Florian Hotel through a shared company, Florian Properties Inc.
According to their LinkedIn profiles, they also own Big Land Pharmasave in Forteau.
SaltWire reached Shane Dumaresque by phone Wednesday, July 26. He declined to comment on the situation with the hotel.
Shane Dumaresque was the Conservative candidate for the riding of Labrador in the 2021 federal election. He lost to incumbent Liberal Yvonne Jones by just under 1,200 votes, attracting 30 per cent of all votes within the riding.
About the hotel
The Florian Hotel first opened as a new hotel in 2016.
Billed as a boutique hotel, it features 21 rooms and a large dining room. Shane Dumaresque is originally from Forteau, and his sister Angela Gilley is the hotel’s general manager and chef, specializing in Basque cuisine.
The hospitality industry has faced significant challenges over the last three years, primarily as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hotel Association of Canada has referred to the hospitality sector as “one of the hardest hit industries” due to COVID and also “one of the last to recover.”
Tender process
According to the public notice, submitted tenders will be unsealed and reviewed Tuesday, Aug. 22, and the sale must be completed on or before Thursday, Sept. 21.
The mortgagee reserves the right to not accept the highest bid or any tender.
