Los Alamos’s historical 1880 Union Hotel, located at 362 Bell St., is listed for sale for $5.5 million.
Originally built four years after the town of Los Alamos was founded in 1876, the 1880 Union Hotel was built as a stagecoach home station with store and lodging and has served as a private residence, restaurant and bar, hotel, and now a wedding and event venue.
The structure currently features nine Old West-themed hotel rooms, a commercial kitchen, a saloon and game room, and a ballroom.
While the 1880 Union Hotel burned down in 1893, it was rebuilt in 1915 as a hotel and saloon, and was restored to its original condition with a replica of its 1880 façade in 1972.
The 1880 Union Hotel also had extensive refurbishment in 2016 that “brought it up to its current luxury standard while honoring its vintage authenticity,” the property listing says.
In a realtor.com article, listing agent Micah Brady with Sotheby’s International Realty in Santa Ynez said that most of these renovations were things like electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, and cosmetic upgrades.
“Because it’s a designated historic building, they were able to do improvements within the interior, but the exterior was a no-go zone,” Brady said. “It gives it character, it’s like walking into a building that you would go into in the wild, wild west.

“The property itself is a historic landmark and was part of the original stagecoach stop that ran up and down California back in the 1800s.”
The venue’s website boasts the many celebrities have visited the 1880 Union Hotel over the years, such as Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, and Jon Bon Jovi, who have all filmed music videos there. Actors Kurt Russel and his daughter Kate Hudson also used the saloon as a wine-tasting venue more recently.
